Every instrument reacts diffrent for every pickup, so the pickup height should be set special for every guitar and the guitar’s owner prefrences.
However, there is few measurments that can be great start point for finding pickup’s „hot spot”.
The measurments should be taken when pressing the last fret. (E1 – the thinnest string, E6- the fattest string)
Humbucker Pickup:
String E1: 1/16″ (1.6mm)
String E6: 5/64″ (2 mm)
Single Coil Pickup:
String E1 8/64″ (3.2 mm)
String E6 6/64″ (2.4 mm)
Humbucker Single coil sized rail-type (Rail series):
String E11/16″ (1.6 mm)
String E6 6/64″ (2.4 mm)
The closer the pickup gets to the strings, the stronger the signal and the presece of the pickup. However, getting a pickup close to the strings brings the magnetic field closer, too. If the magnetic field is too strong, it can make the guitar sound even out of tune, and it can also cause string buzz and reduce sustain. Don’t stick to the rules, don’t be afraid of expriments – the results can be magnificent!
