The very first humbuckers from the ’50s were not wax potted . The practice of wax potting pickups wax to prevent microphonic squealing didn’t become common place with humbuckers until later in the ’70s and ’80s which has been forced of louder stage conditions, louder modern music types.
The unpotted pickups are little more dynamic and touch sensitive, which is well suited to low gain situations. The Potter coils are much more quiter, the high are a little bit more rounder and they are well suited to work in louder situations (and more hi-gain situations).
